This is a truly funny book. I first read "Star of the Sea" by O'Conner, a fictional account of an emigrant ship sailing from Ireland to the U.S. during the Famine. It's a tremendous story, with deeply knowable characters."The Secret World of the Irish Male" is a series of first person stories and observations about O'Conner's life, many written (and previously published) while a news reporter and columnist. It includes the years he spent as an Irishman in London, along with his series about joining an Irish tour group when Ireland was in the World Cup in 1994, which was played in the U.S.
Here's an example of his writing from the period he spent in Greenwich, and his thoughts about the English and Greenwich Mean Time:
"It is oddly characteristic of the English that having spent the last five centuries barging their perfidious way into every single country that had the poor taste to be inhabited by foreigners, wiping out most of the natives and briskly barging back out again with great sackloads of ancient artifacts, they then decided the wanted to colonise time itself! Honest to God, is Wales not enough for them? How can you trust a people who would want to own time?"
