Once Upon a Lyme... A Tale of Two Journeys tells the story of a mysterious illness that stumped a parade of doctors, and the new-found discipline of writing that became the unexpected by-product of years of misdiagnoses. After seeing over two dozen physicians, writing five novels and self-publishing one, Once Upon a Lyme was a personal story that the author felt had to be shared. The book chronicles Hamilton’s search for an answer to a far-flung roster of symptoms and the creative outlet she turned to in case she became bedridden. It took nine years from the onset of the symptoms to learn the name of her nemesis. Because the diagnosis was so long in coming, she now had late-stage Lyme, which is next to impossible to cure. Her only hope at that point was going the "alternative" route, which required leaving normal and taking a huge leap of faith, resorting to methods that are part new-age, part medieval. She would soon learn getting the correct diagnosis was only half the battle. Throughout her struggles, three things saved her from complete despair an overabundance of willpower, an appreciation of the absurd, and writing. Her experiences during that time make for a candid, comic and sometimes harrowing look at what she endured at the hands of medical professionals. What she got for her trouble was a craft that has allowed her to channel her overactive imagination into writing books, which is now her sole occupation—besides fighting Lyme. Though there are moments of despair, Once Upon a Lyme is ultimately about triumph of the spirit over disease, the courage to keep fighting, and the sense of humor necessary to prevail against adversity.

I picked up this book because I had hoped that it would give me insights into Lyme disease since two of my friends have been suffering from this infection for several years. I had hoped to both better understand the disease and possibly learn some new ideas to pass on to them for possible remedies or new information resources that might be of some help.

What I found was a book that, indeed, did outline many of the agonies and frustrations related to this disease plus a memoir of how the author got started in her writing career and the problems faced by those authors who choose to self-publish their work.

I was less interested in the authoring and publishing sections of the book than in the Lyme disease sections, but oddly enough, the two sections both highlighted the similar frustrations of trying to find answers to a problem, deciding whom to trust, and finding the money to pay for what is hoped are going to be the answers you need.

The number of different doctors that the author consulted is mind-boggling, each with his or her own take on what the medical problem was and how to treat it. It was enlightening as well to see how many of these were not covered by health insurance or were outside of the mainstream of what passes for medical science.

Did I find anything in the book to help my friends? Not really. I did pass along a few pieces of information, but it turned out many of the things the author tried had already been tried by my friends, with pretty much the same disappointing results, unfortunately.

The book was well written, but I found myself getting bogged down in the sections about her family and her writing. It wasn't of much interest to me since I was reading the book primarily for the information on Lyme, but other readers may find it of interest.

Moderately recommended overall, but more so for those seeking information about Lyme disease. Perhaps if more people know more about it, it will help in the push for research and finding real answers to relieve the suffering of those afflicted with this very debilitating condition.

I saw this book and was immediately interested as an acquaintance of mine was once telling me about all sorts of bizarre symptoms and she ended up having Lyme as well. So, I wanted to read more. I was glad I did! What a crazy journey. I also enjoyed learning a bit about the author's other books as well, which made me want to read them. The only thing I noticed, was that towards the last half of the book, the editing seemed a bit lacking. Not to the point of distraction, just slightly. Still, it was a good book and I really enjoyed reading about all of the crazy experiences with various medical "professionals".
TMI (to much information)?
Nah! If a story is to be told, ya gotta tell it all. And if a story is to be read, ya hope it leaves a good taste in your mouth. This one is well told. The taste it left me is -- ya think you got problems, just look around.
Thanks Cynthia for a lot of information and for pointing out that I am a lucky guy.
I really hoped to get a idea how to help my daughter get over all her afflictions. But even with a diagnosis there's no real cure . I did get a few useful ideas to help her .In our part of the world medical people do not think of LYME ,and the frustration not knowing what sort of illness so relentlessly attacks your body ,and wellbeing _that is really a sad place. to be. I read with ethusiasm ,enjoyed the secondary story .well done!
I couldn't put this book down. I am amazed at the strength of the author while battling unspeakable pain. But the book was about so much more than fighting a disease. She has a wonderful gift of expressing herself. I was so disappointed she was unable to find a magic cure for Lyme after all her searching, but inspired that she still finds joy in living.
Once Upon a Lyme is written in a way that holds your interest start to finish. I learned a lot about Lyme. I can’t imagine what the author has gone through. I appreciate her sharing her story.
This is a sad but unusual tale of one woman's fight to get herself the simplest diagnosis of one of the most debilitating diseases of our time- a blow by blow inditement of our medical system, and its' failure to warn people in time. Her take on her way to deal with her illness may be unusual to many... But it works for her, and , I suspect, for a great deal more people than just herself. If you know any people with the Lyme disease complex, this book may shock you in its direct and simple path the afflicted take when fighting the unseen enemy becomes just too costly- it's a rare look into the psyche of a person fighting against all odds. May it help many out there to care, deeply, at the human cost to this Nation's citizens.
As a writer and someone who has also experienced Lyme disease, I loved how Cynthia Hamilton wove these two story lines together. I totally related to the parade of ineffective doctors and also the desire to do something constructive in the midst of bone-grinding pain and exhaustion and pour herself into her writing. It was all familiar and affirming, especially since (like the author), I have moved past the worst stages of the disease and made wonderful progress. Cynthia's gradual transformation in Once Upon a Lyme mirrored my own, reminding me of the gift and opportunity we each have to embrace every moment we are given.
