BASAL GANGLIA is a book I had been looking forward to for some time. I've been a fan of Revert's for some time, ever since reading his debut collection, A MILLION VERSIONS OF RIGHT, Even there, I knew I was watching something special. Revert has a genuine knack for creating utterly absurd, ridiculous scenarios and giving them a very emotional, very human core. His first novel, THE TUMOURS MADE ME INTERESTING, only served to drive the point home, as it was one of the most entertaining and devastating books I'd read in years. Watching Revert's work, it's clear that he's been evolving and only getting better. His vision has become more concise, stripping away the juvenile tactics of his earlier works while still retaining the absurd, and building on the crushing emotional weight his work often carries.

This progress has stemmed into something incredible, and has yielded glorious fruit. Revert's latest novel, BASAL GANGLIA, is possibly the best book I read in 2013. To try and describe the impact it book had on me would be impossible. It had a huge effect on me, not just as a writer but as a human person. I cannot recommend this book enough. There is a quiet, patient beauty to BASAL GANGLIA that I hadn't encountered for some time. The basic premise is still rather absurd (a couple exist within a massive pillow fort built in the image of the human brain), but here the emotional human core really shines. Each sentence feels carefully constructed, and the result is a slow, rewarding trek that studies the nature of relationships and, ultimately, the self.

With BASAL GANGLIA, Revert has secured his place as one of the best writers going. In a better world, BASAL GANGLIA would top the bestseller lists. This is truly a book that needs to be read.

Very attractive book, just never got into it.
This book is wonderful and brilliant, captivating and profound. It caught my interest first because I love neurology and second because the plot is so ludicrous that it would have to be either masterful or a joke. It is, indeed, masterful.

Basal Ganglia is the kind of book that makes me say, "I want to write like that." I'll be seeking out more of his work, and soon.
Basal Ganglia takes place in a pillow fort built by lovers Ingrid and Rollo. It meticulously documents their estrangement from one another, their detachment from the world, and their attempt to bring it all back together with the help of their fabric lovechild. It is a piece of literature, in the sense that Kafka's The Trial or Nabokov's Invitation to a Beheading are pieces of literature. This, I am not afraid to say, is a book for the ages.

Revert's style is very straightforward. There is an almost scientific precision to the way in which he chronicles the shared life of Ingrid and Rollo. The book impresses, not with any florid affectations of style but with a well crafted depiction of human relationships that is immediately recognizable even as it unfolds in a genuinely bizarre and dreamlike context. The combination of incredibly strange content and well grounded writing is invigorating. It's like watching Eraserhead as filmed through a documentarian's lens.
Matthew Revert is one of the absolute masters of neosurrealist writing. Intelligent, extremely relatable, surprisingly enthralling for a book with basically only two characters, one setting and not even a lot of spoken dialog or direct interaction between the characters. That minimalism really draws you in to the characters. The air is so thick with their paranoia and loneliness you can practically taste it. And certainly feel it for yourself.
Matthew Revert's BASAL GANGLIA is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. This is not bulls*** hyperbole, I think every other writer should read this book and seethe with envy, and every other person needs to read this book. On a pure sentence level from page one onward, it offers some of the best prose I've ever read in my entire life. On a pure emotional level, it is a visceral, heartbreaking journey from start to finish. It is the connection between two people, and the complexities of love shared between those people. It is an exploration of the intricacies of how we harm each other in relationships, our paranoia, what we hide, what goes unsaid, what little is said, the distortion of memory, the ways in which we unlearn things about ourselves and unravel them again in new shapes, languages, and tongues. It's a book I'll be revisiting my entire life.

"Ingrid's mouth closes before she has a chance to whisper 'goodbye.' It is not a word she feels she can live up to. 'Goodbye' us the most dishonest word language has conjured. It is a muscle we flex to intimidate and impress. A word without flesh. Goodbye is simply a word proceeding hello. To truly leave another, one must never seek contact again. Only death is goodbye."
