4.75 STARS!! I found this to be an engaging historical FICTION read about the complex American writer, Ernest Hemingway, and his four marriages. There are a number of truly beautiful, poetic descriptions that made me stop and just enjoy. Within each of the book's four sections (one for each of Hemingway's wives), the author wove the endings of each marriage with the beginnings of the next. Her crafting of the novel led me to believe Hemingway truly loved being in love and couldn't bear to ever be alone. Of course, I don't know if that's truth or just her dramatization of his life. The novel is written in the first-person POV of each wife, and emphasizes the women's similarities, differences, connections, and possible real-life perceptions about each other--as well as Hemingway and the world at large.

Some reviewers feel the scope of this book is far too narrow, since we learn only as much about the women as their connection to Hemingway, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the story. I also found the factual to be woven seamlessly within the theoretical and fictional that I found myself tempted to believe ALL of it.

It's been a few weeks since I finished reading this novel, yet I'm still very curious about a few points in MRS. HEMINGWAY. So much so that I wish I could have a chat with the author. I'd want to know which parts are true, which might be but can't be proven, and which are fabricated. I don't share or see having questions about a book I've read as a negative. In fact, the highest praise I feel an author can receive is when a reader says how s/he didn't want it to end and that s/he was left wanting more. Because of this novel, I want to research further about Hemingway's work, his life, and that of his wives and contemporaries. If you love history, women's fiction, beautiful language, and complex, introspective, and emotional reads, I'd highly recommend Mrs. Hemingway.

Why not 5 Stars?? The jumping back-and-forth in time within each section (separated chronologically by wives) was irksome here and there, (but it was especially useful in the fourth section. In spite of that jumping around in time, I still very much enjoyed this novel. I'm a huge fan of history in general, and find Hemingway's professional/personal life endlessly fascinating. (I can't say I'm a fan of his, but I do find him an intriguing figure in American Literature/history.) At times repugnant, others endearing, I found Hemingway's depiction in this book to be well-balanced overall. I also felt so much more understanding and empathy for each of the wives than I've had after other historical/fictional accounts.

Mrs Hemingway A Novel Naomi Wood Books Reviews

I listened to the audio version of this book and enjoyed it for the most part.
The reader, Kate Reading, is one of my favorites, and she did an excellent job.
What I found tedious and disconcerting was this chaotic jumping back and forth through the years.
Also, without reading the book "The Paris Wife" the reader would lack knowledge and understanding of many of the people mentioned only in passing here.
All in all it was OK for a light read ( or listen)
I loved this book! Written in four segments, each dealing primarily with one of Ernest Hemingway's wives, the book imagines the loves and longings and jealousies of the four women who allowed him to be the free-wheeling, macho, serial lothario who wrote fine prose but couldn't be faithful to anyone for very long. Hadley, "Fife," and Mary, wives one, two and four, were, incredibly, friends who consulted about Ernest's health and well-being. Wife number three, Martha, was the only one who saw through him but even she could not resist him at first. This telling of the Hemingway wives' sojourns with the great American writer is rich in detail of time and place; and it resonates with emotion. I couldn't put it down.
After reading "The Paris Wife," it lead me to wanting more on the twisted life of Hemingway. Naomi Wood does a nice job of briefly covering each wife and their time with Mr. Hemmingway. I would not say that it goes into great depth as to what these wives truly experienced while they were with him, but enough to get an idea. Since "The Paris Wife" had only covered one wife, I wanted to know more about the others that came after Hadley. As sick as it may be, I wanted to see Pfeif hurt, as well as Hemingway heartbroken when Martha said she was done(even though it was probably only for about an hour). Like I said, I feel like I need to keep reading other books to really "satisfy" the in depth story I am looking for, but this was a great, quick read.
I started this book immediately after finishing "The Paris Wife" because I was interested in learning more about Hemingway's later wives. It's a fascinating story about the writer and the women in his lives. It also gives credence to the theory that Hemingway suffered from post-traumatic encephalopathy resulting from his many head injuries. Each of the women emerges as an interesting character in her own right. Definitely a good read!
A week before I was to attend a writers' retreat at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum Educational Center, I read the review of Wood's Mrs. Hemingway in the NYT Book Review of summer, 2014. What a plum, I thought, and immediately ordered it. I hoped it would arrive before I left for Piggott (Pauline's folks' home) and it did. I'd read enough fan books on Jane Austen's novels that I realized this volume was indeed a fan book. I'd already read Ruth Hawkins' definitive work on Pauline Pfeiffer, so I knew the bare bones biography of this man and his wives.
As some reviewers have mentioned, I thought the titles of each section within a section were confusing. Surely there was a better way to show the flashbacks, etc.
I appreciated Ms. Woods Afterword and Acknowledgments, but didn't care for the question and answer part or the questions for a book club. She obviously did a ton of research. A good read if you're interested in Papa and his harem, uh wives. Poor man! Poor women!
I have read four novels about Hemingway's wives. If you only want to read one, read this one. It takes you through all four of his marriages, the point of his demise, and for a short time afterwards. You'll visit Paris, Key West, Cuba, and Idaho and also get a flavor of Hemingway's life in Spain and London. You'll time travel from the 1920s through to 1961. The wives provide introspection to Hemingway's brilliance, dalliances, and his internal torment. It's a work of fiction but the author did a lot of research so I believe there are a lot of truths in this telling story.
